I'm Back!!

Wow, it’s been over a year since my last post on here. YIKES! Some wonderful things have happened since then.

In November of 2009, I was featured in the Portfolio section of Grand Valley Magazine. They had a great article on me and my photography along with a lot of my photos.

This past June (2010), I became one of the artists in residence at The Raw Canvas Tattoo Studio & Working Artist Gallery. This has been such an amazing opportunity and experience. It is an urban-style gallery that showcases the works of local artists. We have six shows a year. Our next big one is coming up on Friday, April 1st. I will post more on that in a few days.

This past Fall, one of my photographs was published in a worldwide publication called JPG Magazine. My photo received a full two page spread in Issue 23! SOOO exciting!!

In October of last year, Dustin and I bought a house. We absolutely love it and can’t wait for Spring to arrive so we can start planting flowers and creating our new garden!! And… I have a studio space at our new house! Once it warms up I am going to get it all fixed up and ready to start creating in.

This coming year at the gallery I plan on expanding my creativeness more. Going beyond the fine art photography. Bet you’re wondering what I have in mind! Well, you’ll just have to wait and see, because it’s a secret.

Here's what is currently going on with my photography:

KAFM's First Annual Invitational Photography Show

A group of local photographers will display their work at KAFM's Gallery. Featured artists: John Anglim, Kay Crane, Jeff Driehorst, Tracy Baker, Jesse Zacher, Dick Colby, and Kelly Robison. Also featured in this show are the exquisite turned wood pieces of John Jenkins who is donating 100% of his sales to KAFM.

The show will hang through the end of the year.

Opening reception is on Friday, November 6th from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Gallery Hours: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. - Monday through Friday

The gallery is also open by appointment and at all Beyond Radio events.

Bookcliff Christian School

I have donated one of my photographs for their silent auction. The piece I have donated is 11"x14" and is printed on canvas. Hello all!! Sorry it's been a while since I posted anything. We were very busy this summer and it was hard to find a spare moment sometimes. We're all doing great!

I wanted to share some wonderful news!! I have been asked by KAFM Radio here in Grand Junction, to be one of 10 photographers in their 1st Annual Invitational Photography Exhibition. All of our photos will be on display and for sale at the station on Main Street from mid-October through the end of the year.

I was also asked by Grand Valley Magazine to be one of their assignment photographers. John Anglim and I still have to work all the details out on this, so I will give you updates on it. GVM will also be doing a feature piece on me and my photography in their magazine in the next several months.

This is all SO exciting!! What a year it has been for my photography!

My New Lomo Diana + Camera

So, I finally bought a Lomo camera! I've wanted one forever and just never got one. Those of you that don't know anything or much about Lomo or Holga cameras are probably thinking I'm crazy. This is an "old school" style camera that uses 120 film. I haven't shot on film for many years. I absolutely love how the photos look that are shot with these cameras.

Here is a brief history of the camera (taken from their website):

Back in the 1960’s, a small firm in Hong Kong – the Great Wall Plastics Factory – created a dirt-cheap 120 camera called the “Diana.” Crafted entirely of plastic, each camera cost about a dollar. As a mainstream product, the Diana was pretty much a failure – and was discontinued in the 1970’s. But like any superstar cut down in their prime, the Diana’s posthumous appeal skyrocketed. As a cult artistic tool of avant-garde and lo-fi photographers, it was a rousing success! They loved its soft & dreamy images, super-saturated colors, unpredictable blurring, and random contrast. Diana shots are raw & gritty, with a character all their own. They simply cannot be duplicated by any other camera on Earth! In short order, the Diana rose to prominence as one of the most treasured and sought-after cult analog cameras from the late 70’s onward.

Crazy Pumpkin Plants

So, I have pumpkin plants growing like crazy in my garden! Last fall my grandpa gave Maddy a 125 lb. pumpkin that he grew in his garden from heirloom seeds. It was huge! My grandpa wanted some of the seeds so he could plant more this year. When it started getting really cold out, we moved it into the garage so that the seeds wouldn't freeze. We pulled it out of the garage, got most of the seeds out and then buried it in our garden. Well, one day, tons of little pumpkin plants started coming up! Ha ha!!

I have been thinning them out, giving them away, etc... They just keep coming up and getting larger and larger! It rained for about a week here and they doubled in size. I have got to remove more plants because there are too many for such a small space and they are too close to each other.

I took photos of the largest leaf with a dollar bill and just plain so you can see how huge it is! Also took shots of the plants from the front and the side. There are two pictures of Maddy with the pumpkin that my grandpa grew, the one the seeds came from.

Maybe I will end up with a huge pumpkin and I can take it to the Mesa County Fair this summer. That would be so awesome!!

Ok, so it's been a while since I posted something on here. Sorry!! Life has been insanely busy the past few months. We had a great time on the cruise and in San Diego. I took over 1,000 photos and I'm still sorting through them, I'll try to post some really soon. The past month we've been working on the yard and garden, getting it all cleaned up and looking good. Started planting a few things this past week, tomatoes, peppers and herbs. Still have lots of veggie and flower seeds to get planted. So much work but so worth it!!! I've also been getting things ready for my photo show at Barnes and Noble. Less than a month away!!! Yeah! Well, sorry this is short but I have lots to get done. Like I said, I will try to post some pics from our trip and of the garden soon.

K is for Kelly who was struck with an axe!

Ok, so you all probably think that I've totally and completely lost my mind. Although it is quite possible, I assure you that I have not lost it yet! :)

There is a professional photographer in Grand Junction named Melissa Pruitt and she owns La Tee Da Photography. She's an amazing photographer and comes up with really cool and special themed shoots. They are always off the wall and fun.

Her latest project is re-creating the characters in the book called The Gashlycrumb Tinies: or, After the Outing by Edward Gorey. This book was written in 1963 and it is about 26 children who's names each begin with a different letter of the alphabet. Each child dies in some crazy and twisted way.

I was chosen to represent the K. So, mine will be: K is for Kelly who was struck with an axe! This is going to be a fun shoot!! The date and time isn't set up yet, we are still working on that. So, when I have a copy of my ghastly photo I will post it on here.

And yes, I do have a dark and twisted side sometimes! Hee hee! ;)

Barnes & Noble Artist of the Month - June

I have the most exciting news!! I will be the Artist of the Month in June for Barnes and Noble here in Grand Junction!! Woohoo! This means that for the entire month of June, my photography will be on display at the store. There will be an artist's reception for me on Saturday, June 6th. I will also be there that day for the Local Author's Book Signing Event. They have asked me to sign copies of the Capture My Colorado book that I am published in.

This is all so amazing and wonderful! I feel like I'm dreaming! I have worked so hard for so many years to get my photography published and to have it on display somewhere. My dreams are all coming true!! I am also in the process of getting my portfolio ready to present it to The Blue Pig Gallery in Palisade. I would love to be a part of their gallery. There are a few other places that I'm speaking with as well about displaying my work.

I will keep you all updated on any info I have about my show and about the reception. I hope to see everyone there! :)

Carnival Cruise - Elation

Exciting news! We get to go on a cruise at the end of March / beginning of April. We are SOOOO excited about this! This will be Maddy's first time seeing the ocean; what a way to see it!! We are going with a bunch of Dustin's family to celebrate Grandma Johnson's 75th birthday. The ship starts and ends in San Diego, CA. It will travel into the Baja and visit two places, Catalina Island, CA and Ensenada, Mexico. We are planning on having a fun day in San Diego when the ship comes back in and before we head back home.

Above is a photo of the actual ship and also a map of where we will be going. I'm worried that I will break my camera from taking too many photos during the trip! Ha ha!! Hopefully I will get some really good ones.

Ducks Everywhere!

A few weeks ago while delivering parts for work, I passed by the Division of Wildlife pond and saw a massive amount of ducks! As most of you know, my camera goes everywhere with me. So, I pulled into the parking lot, waited for some ducks to move (very slowly) and then I got out and started taking photos like crazy. As long as I didn't move an inch the ducks held still and stayed where they were. If I moved at all they started walking off as fast as they could. I got a lot of wonderful shots and posted four of my favorites on here. It simply amazed me how many ducks were on the pond and on the grass that day. It was awesome!

Two Amazing Books!

I've been reading two great books and I thought that I'd share them with everyone.

The first one is called, Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert. It is a book about one woman's search for everything across Italy, India and Indonesia.

My Mom gave me this book last year for my 30th birthday. Thanks Mom! Up till now I hadn't had a chance to read it. I'm about half way through the book now. I must say that this is one of the best books that I've ever read! I will be sad when I'm done reading it. For me, it's one of those powerful books that grabs hold of you and then you can't put the darn thing down! Laundry... what laundry?! Ha ha!!

Here is one of my favorite lines from it: "Look for God, suggests my Guru. Look for God like a man with his head on fire looks for water."

The other book that I am reading is called, Semiprecious Salvage: Creating Found-Art Jewelry by Stephanie Lee. The book teaches you how to reclaim remnants of the past and reinterpret their beauty in wearable works of mixed-media art.

This is an awesome book! I cannot wait to start looking for goodies to make super amazing and unique jewelry with. The book is full of gorgeous and inspiring projects. Each one has all the directions and lots of great photos.
